2012 Summer-Autumn Season Announced

Today Artistic Director David Lan unveiled the Young Vic’s new season.  In the Main House, Carrie Cracknell will direct Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, followed by Benedict Andrews’ production of Chekhov’s Three Sisters. “Two muscular, shape-shifting plays are brought hurtling into the 21st century,” says Lan.

The new season will also see David Lan direct the premiere of Nathaniel Martello-White’s Blackta in the Maria, and Ria Parry’s production of Gbolahan Obisesan’s Fringe First winner Mad About the Boy in the Clare.

Tickets are on sale now for Friends of the Young Vic; public booking opes 27 Feb at 10 AM.

A Doll's House

29 Jun - 26 Jul

Newly appointed Young Vic Genesis Fellow and associate director Carrie Cracknell, former Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre, teams up with Olivier Award-winner Simon Stephens (Punk Rock, Harper Regan) and Olivier and Tony Award-wining designer Ian MacNeil (Billy Elliot the Musical, Vernon God Little) for a new version of Ibsen’s classic A Doll’s House.

Three Sisters

8 Sep - 13 Oct

Australian director Benedict Andrews returns to the Young Vic after his brilliant 2011 production of The Return of Ulysses to collaborate with renowned German designer Johannes Schütz on Chekhov’s Three Sisters.  Benedict has been lauded in Sydney and Berlin for his bold productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, Blackbird (Schaubühne) and The War of the Roses with Cate Blanchett and The Season at Sarsaparilla (Sydney Theatre Company).

Mad About the Boy

6 Jun - 16 Jun

Fringe First winner Mad About the Boy comes to the Young Vic this summer from writer Gbolahan Obisesan, whose acclaimed production of Sus played at the Young Vic in 2010.  Director Ria Parry, co-artistic director of Iron Shoes, received the 2010 Leverhulme Director’s Bursary and became director in residence at the National Theatre Studio.

Blackta

26 Oct - 17 Nov

Finally, David Lan will direct the premiere of Nathaniel White-Martello’s new play Blackta. An established actor seen most recently at the Young Vic in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, White-Martello’s first play is a biting and profound account of the highs and lows of trying to make it as a black actor -  a ‘blackta’.

This new season will see two of the greatest plays ever written alongside two bold new plays.  Become a Friend of the Young Vic now to jump the queue and book your tickets today!

Getting involved in Wild Swans

Wild Swans in rehearsal

It was by pure chance that I came across the casting call for the community chorus for Wild Swans. I happened to be in Chinatown one afternoon to do a bit of grocery shopping with my friend and if I hadn’t dropped by a snack store out of curiosity and bought something, I wouldn’t have seen the flyers sitting by the counter, calling out to be picked up and looked at. I took up the opportunity to experience what being part of a professional production would be like, being a bit of a theatre enthusiast myself; I’d never seen a real team at work, and to perform at the Young Vic, even if part of a chorus, seemed like something that would never otherwise have appeared possible. Wild Swans presents the dramatic political history of China on an English stage and is definitely something that is fresh, exciting, and unconventional. The behind-the-scenes experience I have had so far has been amazing, and even though it’s only been two weeks so far, my understanding of how professional theatre works has already grown exponentially. I cannot wait for the entire production to come together and for the audience to experience its power.

Ian, a community chorus member of Wild Swans
